IBDP  FAQs

What is the DP?

DP stands for Diploma Programme, the IB's academic option for 11th and 12th grade students. RHS offers students three levels of participation:

  • Diploma Candidate (Full Diploma)

  • MPS DP Medallion

  • Participant

What are HL and SL?

HL and SL are the two levels of courses offered in the DP. HL stands for "Higher Level" and SL is "Standard Level".

HL courses are more intensive; students will generally cover more topics of study in an HL course. HL courses might require more internal or external assessments, and the rubrics used for these assessments often require a higher level of performance. Students will typically have 1.5 to 2 hours of work per week for each HL course.

SL Courses are also advanced courses, but cover fewer topics than HL courses in the same amount of time. Students will typically have 1 to 1.5 hours of work per week for each HL course.

Can I Earn College Credit for DP Courses?

The decision to award college credit for DP courses is made by individual universities. To see if the univeristy you are intersted in offers credits for the courses you wish to take, check out the following links:

Have an unaswered Question?

What Is Expected in a DP course?

DP students are expected to participate in class discussions, come prepared to class, complete the assigned homework, ask for help when they need it, and complete all IB Internal and External Assessments for each of their IB courses. Students should expect from 1 to 2 hours of homework each week for each DP course they take.

Internal Assessments

Internal assessments are assignments developed by the IB to be completed in class and graded by the teacher. The teacher submits the grades for these assignments to the IB for moderation. The IB requests samples to be sent, which are then graded by IB examiners. These assessments are a component of a students' IB 1-7 score.

External Assessments

External assessment are primarily exams taken at the end of the two year course. These exams are developed and graded by the IB. Some external assessments are performance assessments completed in class, but sent to the IB to be graded. All external assessments are also components of a students' IB 1-7 score.
